Content Description

The Harold Troxel Vedder Photograph Collection consists of images assembled by Vedder during his student years at Oregon Agricultural College. The photographs depict campus views and buildings, athletic teams and events, especially football; military training; and student activities. Of special note are images documenting the rivalry between Oregon Agricultural College and the University of Oregon (commonly known as the Civil War) and students guarding the Lady of the Fountain on lower campus, which was frequently a target of vandalism.

Most of the photographs in the collection are photographic postcards; some were published by the Pacific Photo Co. in Salem, Oregon. Several of the images are snapshot photographic prints. All of the images have been assigned individual item numbers (P190:01 thru P190:72).

Arrangement

The Harold Troxel Vedder Photograph Collection is arranged in two series: I. Photographs from Scrapbook, 1913-1914 and II. Loose Photographs, 1915-1916.

Processing Note

The photographs in Series I were originally affixed to a scrapbook and were removed from the scrapbook by Archives' staff in 1990 soon after the materials were received.

We acknowledge that materials in SCARC collections and the language that describes them may be harmful. We are actively working to address our descriptive practices; for more information please see our SCARC Anti-Racist Actions Statement online.

The archivist-prepared description of this collection uses the phrase "Civil War" to refer to the long-standing athletic rivalry between Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. A history of this athletic rivalry, and use of the phrase "Civil War" to describe it, is available online in The Origins of the "Civil War" Football Game blog post.

In June 2020, Oregon State University President Edward J. Ray announced that the term "Civil War" will no longer be used by either university because it "represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery."

We acknowledge the racism represented by the use of this phrase and the harm it may cause our users. In order to provide historical context and to enable standardized searching and access across our collections, we have retained the use of this phrase in the collection description.

[Date of acknowledgement: November 2021]
