Whitman College Career Center records, 1940-2000

The Career and Community Engagement Center (CCEC) at Whitman College has grown into a cornerstone of student support, reflecting the institution's evolving commitment to preparing students for life after college. Although its early development isn't extensively detailed in published institutional histories, a major shift occurred in 2010, when Whitman unified its career services, internship advising, and community outreach under one center. This reorganization signaled a broader emphasis on experiential learning and civic engagement.

Among the Center's earliest programs was Whitman Teaches the Movement (2011), which involved students teaching civil rights history in local schools. In 2012, the Community Fellow Program launched, placing students in paid positions with Walla Walla nonprofits. A key initiative, the Whitman Internship Grant (WIG), has provided funding for over 1,500 students to pursue unpaid internships, including international placements beginning in 2014. These efforts have expanded access to real-world experience regardless of financial background.

In 2021, the Center was renamed the Career and Community Engagement Center to reflect its dual focus on professional development and community involvement. That same year, Whitman received a $5 million Serrurier "Life After Whitman" endowment, supporting early career coaching and additional internship opportunities.

Today, the CCEC offers one-on-one advising, workshops, alumni networking, internship support, and community engagement programming, all aimed at helping students translate their liberal arts education into meaningful career paths.
