Historical Note

Mu Phi Epsilon is a co-ed musical fraternity intended to honor student acheivements in musicianship and scholarship. The society was originally founded in 1903 at the Metropolitan College of Music in Cincinatti, Ohio as a sorority for female musicians. The sorority went coed in 1977, after Title IX legistlation demanded that all professional and honor societies admit all sexes. Whitman students established the Mu Zeta chapter in 1920 at the Conservatory to honor high-acheiving female musicians. The Whitman chapter ceased operations on campus in the late 1970s, but the alumni chapter remains active to this day.
